Project Description PDF Print E-mail

The project aims at contributing to poverty alleviation and income security of smallholder and disadvantaged actors in the dairy sector through building institutional capacity and self organisation as well as market orientation of smallholder dairy production with a special focus on the diffusion of environmentally sound dairy production processes.

The concept is to update knowledge and didactic skills of staff in higher education institutions (HEI) in Africa to enable the development and adaptation of curricula that build theoretical, practical and social know-how to educate students on sustainable and quality oriented dairy value chain management while considering poverty reduction.

The outputs envisaged include sustainable linkages between HEI and dairy industry forming opportunities for joint research and strategic planning for improved management of industrial dairy processes. A network of HEI in Eastern and Western Africa will collaborate to share experiences, deliberate on challenges on reforming higher education curricula and coordinate the implementation of new interdisciplinary course on sustainable and quality-oriented dairy production. Egerton University (EGU), Kenya, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Nigeria, University of Education (UOE), Ghana and University of Khartoum (UOK), Sudan will contribute staff and students as well as institutional infrastructure towards enabling the achievement of overall project goals.
